MAD in Spain

For punishment at the temerity of nipping off to the continent for a sunny break it’ll always be the case that as one leaves the sodden grey dirge of London, the clouds disband and pour blazing sunshine into the streets of our great capital… provoking carnival and cheer and a significant increase in ice cream sales.

It was no different last week as a contingent of Pirates broke free of the unusually baking Albion and flocked to Madrid as delegates to MAD in Spain… a conference for designers, by designers.

The absolute highlight was young Alex Trochut with his unique brand of illustrated typography. An overly modest claim to not being a designer couldn’t shake the utter brilliance of his work and the generosity at which he laid his technique and process bare – going through every step he took along the way. Following up such a star is no mean feat but last minute substitute Johnny Kelly held his own with a tour of talent and technique taking us through his brilliant animation work for Adobe.

The spinach and pine nut croquettes were a revelation too…
